Growing Heirloom Tomatoes in Maine

Growing Heirloom Tomatoes in Maine

Growing Heirloom Tomatoes in Maine

In this enlightening presentation, we will discuss how to care for your tomatoes from seedlings to harvest. You will learn about when to plant, water, feed, and nurture your tomatoes so that they thrive. We will also discuss some of the common challenges that we have all encountered in our shorter growing season. Additionally, we will offer an opportunity to share tomato tales and ask any tomato related questions.

About the Presenter

Christy Anderson is an educator and gardener both by trade and by heart. In an effort to expand her platform, Christy founded Mt. Gile's Famous, a MOFGA certified organic seedling producer specializing in preserving open-pollinated heirloom and endangered tomato varieties. Her passion for tomatoes has led to a collection of nearly 2,000 varieties from across the globe. By sharing their stories and encouraging people to grow at least one in their garden each year, she hopes that these tomatoes will continue to thrive for generations to come.

Christy's strong belief in seed sovereignty led to Mt. Gile's Famous becoming the first nursery partner to join the Open Source Seed Initiative (OSSI). As an OSSI partner, Mt. Gile's Famous is proud to offer many OSSI-pledged seedlings each year, including several from the Dwarf Tomato Project. She encourages everyone to save and share seeds from these wonderful varieties.

In recent years, Christy has presented at the Common Ground Fair, and earlier this semester, was invited to deliver a lecture at Bowdoin College for the Bowdoin Organic Garden. She is delighted to offer these educational sessions in cooperation with Bow Street Market.
